Manchester United Launch 2016-17 3rd Kit: Images, Details and Reaction

Rory MarsdenJul 28, 2016

Manchester United released their third kit for the 2016-17 season on Friday, with the design "taking inspiration from the club's early years as Newton Heath LYR Football Club."

According to the official United website, the kit—which includes a predominantly white shirt with black accents—pays homage to the club's modest beginnings as a railway workers' team in 1878 and its rise to become "the biggest and best known football club in the world."

United revealed the new kit via their Twitter feed, along with an image of Morgan Schneiderlin, new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw all donning the strip:

As with all United's kits for 2016-17, club sponsor Chevrolet's logo is prominent in the middle of the shirt.

Meanwhile, kit manufacturer Adidas—in the second season of its record-breaking partnership with the Manchester club—features its trademark three stripes prominently in black down each side of the shirt.

United's statement elaborated on the ideas behind the design, which integrates the Manchester’s coat of arms:

"

The white kit with black accents takes inspiration from the City of Manchester’s Coat of Arms which features a worker bee, a symbol of the city’s history as a leading-light at the forefront of the UK’s industrial heritage. Adidas has incorporated this symbolism into the new design as a Badge of Honour to demonstrate that, through hard work, a "never say die" attitude and the highest of standards, Manchester United has evolved to become pioneers of the international football game. In continuously striving for greatness and success, Manchester United has become the world's best supported football club.

"

Per Adidas, the kit will be available from Monday:

The team will wear it for the first time when they face Galatasaray in a pre-season friendly in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Saturday, their penultimate warm-up game before their meeting with Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield on August 7.

United will also don the new third kit in their first match of the 2016-17 Premier League season away at Bournemouth on August 14, as manager Jose Mourinho looks to make a winning start to his competitive tenure with the Red Devils.
