A late surge by defending PGA champion Jason Day has put him in contention as the 2016 event moves into the weekend at Baltrusol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey.

A string of seven birdies in eight holes gave Day a 65 for the day and moved him within two shots of leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb, who will play in the final pairing on Saturday tied at nine under par.

Streb made history as just the 30th golfer ever to card 63 at a major with his impressive second round. Just 12 days ago, Henrik Stenson did the same with a stunning final round to win The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Stenson's also in the mix for the weekend, three shots off the pace at six under par. Rickie Fowler comes in at four under, Jordan Spieth is three under and Open runner-up Phil Mickelson made the cut at one over par.

Rory McIlroy was not so lucky. The former World No. 1 goes home after carding a three-over 143. The news was even worse for Dustin Johnson, who saw his streak of 25 made cuts come to an end after a nine-over 149.
