Michael Phelps Wins Silver Medal During Men's 100M Butterfly at 2016 Olympics
Michael Phelps entered the 100-meter butterfly final a perfect 3-of-3 when it came to capturing gold medals in the event on the Olympic stage, but he failed to make it 4-of-4 as he settled for the silver medal Friday night in Rio de Janeiro.
Phelps finished with a time of 51.14 seconds in a three-way tie for silver with South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh. Singapore's Joseph Schooling took home gold while setting a new Olympic record with a time of 50.39 seconds.
ESPN.com's Darren Rovell noted Schooling's win was a full-circle moment for the 21-year-old swimming superstar:

The 31-year-old Phelps now owns an Olympic-record 27 medals.
To put Phelps' time into perspective, he nabbed a first-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic trials in 51 seconds flat, per CBS Sports' Colin Ward-Henninger.
Furthermore, Phelps captured gold at the 2004 Games in Athens with a time of 51.25 seconds, while his 2008 and 2012 first-place finishes clocked in at 50.58 seconds and 51.21 seconds, respectively.
Unfortunately for Phelps, the swim wasn't all positive, considering he finished in a dead heat with le Clos after the two engaged in some smack talk a year ago.
"I just did a [100-meter butterfly] time that [Phelps] hasn't done in four years, so he can keep quiet now," le Clos said after swimming an African-record 50.56-second 100-meter butterfly at the World Championships, per NBC Sports' Nick Zaccardi.
However, Phelps responded at the Phillips 66 National Championships, where he clocked in a 100-meter butterfly of 50.45 seconds that bested his gold-medal-winning time at each Games, per the Associated Press' Paul Newberry (via the Baltimore Sun).
This time around, though, the two battled to a tie.
Phelps did best le Clos in the 200-meter butterfly—an event in which the South African failed to medal.
Considering how dominant Phelps has been at 31 years old after expectations were tame for the legend entering Brazil, he has no reason to hang his head following Friday's final.
