WWE Announces New Universal Championship Title for Raw: Details and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerJul 25, 2016

After Dean Ambrose retained the WWE Championship Sunday night at Battleground, the company didn't wait long to reveal its plans for Raw's top title.

Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon and general manager Mick Foley announced Monday night that the WWE Universal Championship will be awarded at SummerSlam. WWE shared a replay of the reveal:

Some on social media were underwhelmed by the name given to Raw's top belt, and SiriusXM host Sam Roberts didn't like the moniker at all:

Bleacher Report's Mike Chiari questioned whether the name was even accurate:

WWE, however, needed to establish a new title for its flagship show. SmackDown Live couldn't be the only show with a world champion, and having the WWE champion show up on both programs to defend the belt would've undermined the brand split.

The creation of the Universal Championship will also allow WWE to build up a new top star.

The company could've had Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock be the first WWE undisputed champion in 2001. Instead, it went with Chris Jericho, who was a relatively fresh face but one of the building blocks for the future.

After defeating Roman Reigns on Monday in the Raw main event, Finn Balor will face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the Universal Championship. Rollins would make for a logical champion, and beating Rollins at one of the biggest shows of the year would help Balor cement himself as a main event player.

Whatever direction WWE goes, the summer is setting up to be entertaining as the biggest stars compete for the newest prize.
