Astros' and Rangers' Double-A Affiliates Brawl After Hit Batter

Kyle NewportJul 25, 2016

The Corpus Christi Hooks (Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros) and Frisco RoughRiders (Texas Rangers affiliate) faced off in an in-state rivalry Sunday.

When Hooks designated hitter Danry Vasquez got drilled in the leg by pitcher Yohander Mendez on the first pitch of the second inning, there was zero hesitation by the batter as to what to do next.

It was go time.

Vasquez dropped his bat and sprinted toward the mound. Although Mendez did not appear eager to fight, the southpaw greeted the charging hitter with a flying glove.

With that, we had ourselves a basebrawl.

Both benches emptied onto the field, where they converged at the mound. While some players tussled in the middle of the group, there was also extracurricular activity going on at the perimeter. The incident even reached home plate before cooler heads prevailed.

The basebrawl delayed the game for approximately 11 minutes, according to MiLB.com. Vasquez, Mendez and the Hooks' Ramon Laureano (who was on deck at the time of the beaning) were all ejected. Now, the teams wait to see what suspensions will be handed down.
