Senior British Open 2016: Final Leaderboard Scores, Prize-Money Payouts and More

Gianni VerschuerenJul 24, 2016

Paul Broadhurst edged out Miguel Angel Jimenez and a host of other stars on the final day of the 2016 Senior British Open, holding on to win the title after a round of four-under 68.

Scott McCarron and Magnus P. Atlevi both led the pack at some point on Sunday but fell back on the back nine, and Jimenez and Broadhurst went to the 18th with the championship on the line. The Spaniard double-bogeyed the hole, however, finishing with a score of three over.

A total prize-money purse of $1,350,000 has been reserved for this event, with the full payout set to be announced at a later date, per the PGA Tour's official website

Recap

Jimenez entered the final day of the Senior British Open with a healthy lead, but a disastrous showing on the back nine doomed the veteran and opened the door for Broadhurst to get his first win on the Senior Tour in 2016.

As shared by Golf Channel's Todd Lewis, Jimenez seemed relaxed coming into the final round after his superb showing on Saturday:

Early on, the Spaniard did exactly what he needed to do, making par on the first five holes before bagging his first birdie. While he was far from perfect from the tee, his approaches and short game were flawless, and with the pack struggling behind him, Jimenez appeared to be on his way to an easy win.

The Senior Tour's official Twitter account shared this footage of one of his beautiful approaches:

But things started to unravel on the ninth, which the 52-year-old bogeyed to bring his score back to par. And while his main rivals were eating into his three-shot lead, he started the back nine with a double bogey, which allowed Atlevi and McCarron to pass him on the leaderboard.

Atlevi had boosted his score with five birdies on the front nine, but a bogey on the 16th pushed him back into third place. Jimenez tied things up at the top of the leaderboard with a birdie on the 11th, and after dropping another shot on the 13th, he once again bridged the gap to McCarron on the next hole.

But out of the background, Broadhurst had passed the duo thanks to a flawless front nine and two birdies on the back nine ahead of the 15th hole. McCarron's strong run came to an end on the 16th, and he finished with a score of three under for the day, two shots behind the leader.

Broadhurst led Jimenez by one shot ahead of the final hole, and the latter proceeded to record his second double bogey of the day, allowing Broadhurst to seal the deal with a simple par.

It's an incredible comeback for Broadhurst, who started the tournament with a 75 but only got better as time wore on. Jimenez's meltdown on the back nine will be the main talking point, though, as we're not used to seeing such a poor outing from the Spaniard.
