Travis Frederick, Cowboys Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Mike ChiariAug 13, 2016

The Dallas Cowboys locked up one of their offensive line's anchors Saturday by signing center Travis Frederick to a six-year, $56.4 million contract with $28 million guaranteed in the first three seasons, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rand Getlin of NFL Network was the first to report Frederick would be made the league's highest-paid center.

The 25-year-old Wisconsin alum has quickly developed into one of the NFL's premier centers. He entered 2016 having started 48 of a possible 48 games in his career since the Cowboys selected him with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

Frederick was named to the Pro Bowl in both 2014 and 2015, and he has been a standout performer despite sharing the line with two other perennial Pro Bowlers in Tyron Smith and Zack Martin.

Dallas picked up Frederick's fifth-year option for the 2017 season, but it was simply precautionary and a precursor to a long-term agreement.

After the Cowboys exercised his option, Frederick expressed excitement and a desire to remain with the organization, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

"

Obviously, we'd love to do a long-term deal. That's something that still has yet to be worked out. But the fact that they picked up the option just shows they have faith in me, and that they're happy with what I've been able to accomplish so far. Hopefully, we can use this time to continue to build and get better and build our relationship closer.

"

Frederick's hopes came to fruition, and he will continue to be a huge part of what many consider the best offensive line in football for several years to come.

Despite Dallas' struggles in 2015 due largely to quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant missing significant time due to injuries, Frederick and the offensive line continued to shine.

That was apparent based on running back Darren McFadden's career season. He ranked fourth in the league with 1,089 rushing yards.

Frederick had a tougher job than perhaps anyone else on the team as he had to work with four different signal-callers in Romo, Matt Cassel, Kellen Moore and Brandon Weeden.

While the turnover was constant and the quarterback play was less than stellar, Frederick excelled in his role and furthered his reputation as one of the NFL's best at his position.

The Cowboys raised some eyebrows when they spent a first-round pick on Frederick, but the move has paid big dividends for them, and after extending him, Dallas won't have to worry about the center spot for the foreseeable future.
