Josh Gordon Reportedly Reinstated by NFL

Mike ChiariJul 21, 2016

After Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon sat out the entire 2015 season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the league reportedly reinstated him Monday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, citing a source, reported Gordon will be suspended for the first four games under the terms of his reinstatement. Rapoport added that Gordon's reinstatement is "conditional," but the wide receiver can participate in training camp.

Rapoport also added Gordon can play during the preseason and can be in team meetings while suspended.

On July 21, Rapoport reported that Gordon met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell regarding reinstatement.

At the time, ESPN.com's Dan Graziano said it was unlikely that a decision regarding Gordon's status for the 2016 campaign would be reached before the start of the regular season.

The meeting with Goodell was a "significant" step for Gordon, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, "because Goodell wouldn't take the time to meet with Gordon unless the receiver was taking the necessary steps to get back into the NFL."

Gordon also missed all but five games in 2014 due to suspension after enjoying a career year in 2013 with 87 receptions for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.

According to Spotrac, the Baylor product has one year remaining on his contract before he becomes a restricted free agent in 2017.

The Browns lost Travis Benjamin to the San Diego Chargers in free agency during the offseason and selected Baylor's Corey Coleman in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft as a replacement. Cleveland has few other proven options at receiver, so quarterback Robert Griffin III and head coach Hue Jackson will likely welcome Gordon with open arms upon his eventual return.

While it is difficult to predict Gordon's form after he missed well over a season, he was once among the most dynamic pass-catchers in the league. Cleveland sorely missed his playmaking ability during his absence.
