Sky Sports News HQ later reported that Wijnaldum was having a medical at Liverpool's training ground.
Per Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have also shown interest in the Dutchman this summer.
The move would represent a profit of around £10 million for the relegated Magpies, who snapped up the 25-year-old from PSV Eindhoven for £14.5 million last summer.
According to James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo, Wijnaldum could take part in the Reds' pre-season tour of the United States—a medical on the other side of the Atlantic would allow him to link up with his new team-mates in California.
The Chronicle's Lee Ryder supplied further details:
Wijnaldum is an attacking midfielder who thrives on intelligent movement in the final third, strong positioning and an eye for goal—in that sense, it's easy to see why Liverpool may be interested in him.
However, his away form was particularly poor last season—all 11 of his goals were scored at St. James' Park—and he's not known for his work rate.
Given that Jurgen Klopp demands energy and the willingness to press from his players, it would seem strange to target the Dutchman, not to mention Liverpool's three attacking-midfield slots are already taken up by Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
If deployed behind them as a central midfielder, the Reds could find themselves overrun unless Wijnaldum is willing to do a lot more running than he's used to.
Nevertheless, WhoScored.com's Dinesh Hardayal has faith in Klopp's ability to get the best out of him:
Indeed, he could work in a central-midfield three or fill one of the attacking slots if Daniel Sturridge is absent and Firmino becomes a false nine. At the very least, the Reds will have another goal threat to call upon.
Meanwhile, according to ESPN FC's Peter O'Rourke, Liverpool might also be set to "firm up their interest" in Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko, along with Juventus, who could pursue the France international if they lose Paul Pogba.

Per Ryder, the Toon Army made no secret of their desire to see the back of the Frenchman during Wednesday's pre-season friendly with Doncaster Rovers:
The midfielder is capable of great things—his dribbling and eye for a pass going forward can cause plenty of problems for the opposition.
The Chronicle's Mark Douglas noted the stark contrast in the contributions he offered for France at UEFA Euro 2016—the final in particular—and his underperformance at St. James' Park:
If Liverpool are nearing a deal for Wijnaldum, it seems highly unlikely they'll pursue another midfielder this summer.
Further, Sissoko's perceived lack of effort and poor attitude over the last two seasons at Newcastle should also give them cause for concern—he'd be a real gamble.
At his best, he's good enough to play for the Reds or a UEFA Champions League club, but he's not earned the move.
