Adrien Broner Ordered to Spend 30 Days in Jail: Latest Details and Comments

Former WBA super lightweight champion Adrien Broner has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for missing a scheduled court appearance Tuesday.ย 

Per Kevin Grasha of theย Cincinnati Enquirer,ย Judge Robert Ruehlman found Broner to be in contempt of court for not showing up to a trial and ordered him to serve the time.

Broner was due to appear in court after beingย indictedย in April on charges of felonious assault, aggravated robbery and robbery stemming from a January incident outside of a Cincinnati bowling alley.

Per Grasha, Broner did show up in court Tuesday, but not until "around noon," by which time Ruehlman had already issued the arrest warrant. Broner told the judge that "somebody put something in my drink" the night before and that he had "been sick all morning."

Grasha noted that Ruehlman said he "may have" dismissed Broner's case if he had been punctual. "Heย looks like heโ€™s drunk or hungover," the judge said after the boxer showed up late. "To coin a little boxing phraseโ€”youโ€™re not ducking this one."

The 26-year-old Bronerย issued an optimistic tweet Monday:

Broner last fought in April, defeatingย Ashley Theophane by ninth-round TKO in a fight that was supposed to be for the WBA junior welterweight title before Bronerย missed weightย and was stripped of the belt. He does not have another opponent lined up at the moment.
