Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Fabinho, Bastian Schweinsteiger Rumours

Rob BlanchetteJul 18, 2016

Manchester United have asked "to be informed of developments" over the future of AS Monaco defender Fabinho after the French club told the Brazil international he can depart the Ligue 1 side.

Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reported the full-back has been on United's radar for 12 months and that the Premier League club are considering a £25 million bid for the 22-year-old.

Fabinho would cover the problematic right-back position for new manager Jose Mourinho, who currently has the choice of Matteo Darmian and burgeoning talent Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Fosu-Mensah started at right-back in the self-proclaimed Special One's first game in charge—a pre-season win at Wigan Athletic on Saturday—but the Netherlands international could have a future in the centre of the park.

Napoli and Manchester City are also tracking Fabinho, per Jones, and the former Real Madrid B loanee is represented by agent Jorge Mendes, who has had plenty of dealings with United in recent transfer windows. The player witnessed a recent proposed £12 million transfer to Napoli fall through, according to Jones, with Monaco now slapping a huge price on his head as the Red Devils circle.

Here is a video of the right-back in action:

Fabinho started 34 games in Ligue 1 last season, according to WhoScored.com, and found the net six times—as well as providing four assists.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe recently lauded the Brazilian, who can also play as a defensive-midfield enforcer, per uMAXit Football:

Mourinho only has a few weeks left to evaluate which players he needs to buy and sell, and interest from Turkish club Besiktas could see Bastian Schweinsteiger make a quick exit from English football, per Jones.

The Germany captain suffered from injury for large spells since his switch from Bayern Munich one year ago, and the exit of mentor and former coach Louis van Gaal could see the midfielder follow him out the door at Old Trafford.

However, Mourinho has always favoured having experienced and mature players in his squad, and Schweinsteiger has much to offer at the age of 31.

His game is based on intelligence, and he could dovetail seamlessly with Michael Carrick in the defensive positions.

If Mourinho can keep the German fit, he will be an asset in the next 12 months, even if the manager wishes to bring in a young, vibrant midfielder with greater potential.

When fit under Van Gaal, the player had plenty of energy and control, but the toxic nature of the Dutchman's tactics did not help him play to his full potential during his first season in England.
