Tom SunderlandJul 20, 2016

Middlesbrough have completed the loan signing of Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo as they continue their preparations for a return to the Premier League.

The promoted outfit confirmed the transfer via their official website, with the former Manchester City frontman set to make his return to the English top flight two years after leaving the Etihad Stadium.

Middlesbrough provided official confirmation of the transfer via their official Twitter account on Wednesday:

The 30-year-old joined Valencia on a season-long loan from City in 2014 before making the switch permanent 12 months ago, but his return to La Liga wasn't the success he had hoped for.

In a similar deal, Negredo can make his switch to the Riverside Stadium permanent next summer. The Northern Echo's Scott Wilson reported the purchase option in the deal is worth €10 million (£8.4 million):

Negredo scored 12 goals in 40 total appearances across all competitions for Los Che last season, only five of which came in league competition.

The Mirror's Ed Malyon noted that Negredo's departure from the Spanish outfit may not upset too many at the Mestalla Stadium after he failed to live up to expectations at Valencia:

Middlesbrough have already flexed their muscle in the transfer market this summer. The north-east club signed three-time Champions League-winning goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer, Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon for £12 million and Ajax youngster Viktor Fischer for a more modest reported sum of £3.8 million.

Negredo's arrival will bring a more seasoned head to manager Aitor Karanka's front line, however, having helped the Citizens win a Premier League and Capital One Cup double in 2014.

According to the Telegraph's Luke Edwards, Negredo is set to rake in wages of £100,000 a week at the Riverside, and Boro will hope their latest capture is worth such a hefty investment.
