The New Day vs. the Wyatt Family Announced for WWE Battleground 2016

Tyler ConwayJul 12, 2016

The Wyatt Family got the best of The New Day when the (two-time) tag team champs visited the Wyatts' compound Monday. But in two weeks at WWE Battleground 2016, we'll get to see whether the Wyatts can go over in a feud inside the ring.

WWE announced Tuesday the Wyatts and New Day will go head-to-head in a six-man tag match at the July 24 pay-per-view. It will mark the likely culmination of a feud that began in the aftermath of this year's Money in the Bank and has created the first fissures in the typically unflappable New Day.

Xavier Woods has become alternatively transfixed and fearful of the Wyatts, walking away from Big E and Kofi Kingston two Mondays ago and imploring his teammates to take the threat more seriously.

Big E and Kofi found out firsthand what Woods meant on Monday's Raw, taking a beating at the Wyatt compound in a scene that looked awfully Final Deletion-like. The Wyatts surrounded them with cars, chased them with deadly weapons and finally beat them down in a muddy mess of an affair.

Like nearly everything Wyatt-related of late, the segment was better in theory than in practice. The New Day and The Wyatt Family are two of the most cartoonish factions on the roster; having a group of bearded weirdos with magic powers and three dudes who gallop around with unicorn horns on their heads seems ready-made for some tongue-in-cheek niche fun.

Instead, their compound battle played out like a WWE version of Final Deletion without the fun.

Perhaps it would have all worked better if the Wyatts were a viable, dangerous faction. Bray Wyatt and Company have made a habit out of winning the early parts of feuds. They attack and pummel and give breathy promos about bringing an opponent down, only to fall short when it's time for the payoff.

By WrestleMania 32, the Wyatts' star had fallen to the point WWE scrapped plans for a Bray-Brock Lesnar feud and fed the Family to The Rock. There's not much intimidation to be found when Erick Rowan is the recipient of the fastest loss in WrestleMania history.

Bray's injury and the family's subsequent absence from WWE programming have offered a chance at a reset. They didn't come back as faces the way many had hoped, but perhaps this New Day feud will give them a chance to become a villain with some actual teeth.

Either way, this all but ensures The New Day will break the record for longest tag team championship reign. With no other real challengers in sight, maybe the Wyatts get the win at Battleground and even take the straps off the world-famous champs at SummerSlam on Aug. 21.

Anything to bring Bray Wyatt back to viability heading into the brand split.
