Gennady Golovkin vs. Kell Brook Announced: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Tom SunderlandJul 8, 2016

Gennady Golovkin will defend his IBF, WBA, WBC and IBO Middleweight world championship belts against IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook on September 10 at the O2 Arena, it's been announced.

Sky Sports News HQ confirmed the shock bout after Golovkin was expected to go up against another Briton, Chris Eubank Jr., in his next bout:

Golovkin has finished his opponents in 32 of his 35 fights and was quoted by Boxing News Online, saying: “I’m very excited to be fighting in front of the great British boxing fans and promise another ‘Big Drama Show’ against Kell Brook.”

The bout represents a tremendous opportunity for Special K, but it's also a potentially treacherous path to walk considering he'll need to move up two weight classes for the middleweight matchup.

Nevertheless, Brook hasn't shied away from his chance, and the 36-0 welterweight appeared on Sky Sports to describe the swift manner in which this fixture was booked:

GGG boasts an almost identically imposing record of 35-0 in his professional career, and he'll go in search of a spectacular 16th championship defence against one of the finest fighters England has produced of late.

Eubank Jr. was the man being mentioned as Golovkin's next opponent, but IFL TV presenter Kugan Cassius detailed the "ruthless" manner in which Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn went for Brook instead:

The fight is certainly an audacious route for Brook to make his debut at middleweight, going up against one of the most furious punchers, if not the most, currently on the circuit.

Golovkin most recently proved his credentials with a second-round knockout of Dominic Wade at The Forum in Inglewood, California, but the O2 Arena will undoubtedly give Brook a considerable home advantage.

Kazakh contender Golovkin has never fought in the United Kingdom, but he has beaten two British fighters in recent times, knocking out Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray in 2013 and 2015, respectively.

Brook, who has ended his last three fights in succession early, is also looking to prove his power in a higher weight division, having at times looked as though he could handle his own above welterweight.
