WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from July 6

Erik BeastonJul 7, 2016

For 28 minutes on Wednesday night, The Revival and American Alpha competed for tag team supremacy.

The NXT Tag Team Championships were on the line in a 2-Out-of-3 Falls match that not only ranked among the best WWE matches of the year by night's end but also established all four Superstars as the biggest winners of the broadcast.

The match type itself is an old one, used for generations to settle longstanding rivalries. The falls, though, were traditionally spread out over the course of a match's run time. But on Wednesday night, champions and challengers delivered a relatively fresh take on the gimmick.

The first fall came 23 minutes into the bout, giving fans what was essentially a full championship battle. From there, the proceeding falls came more rapidly, the teams exhausted after their war of attrition.

The action contained within was phenomenal. Chad Gable, Jason Jordan, Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson have impeccable chemistry. It is almost as if each knows what the others will do. Their timing is phenomenal, and their ability to create drama using fresh spots only helped to fuel their best match to date.

Dash and Dawson's victory essentially brings the program to an end, robbing fans of further battles between the duos in NXT. Yet somehow, that's OK. The feud wraps up having delivered three extraordinary wrestling matches that reintroduced fans to the sweet science of tag team wrestling and made stars of all four men.

Both teams are better for having worked with each other, the tag team division is better for having been championed by both and fans are better off for having had the opportunity to witness the series.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

She may not have emerged from Wednesday's broadcast victorious, but Alexa Bliss turned in the best performance of her career, overshadowing the immensely popular Bayley in a strong match.

Prior to Wednesday's show, Bliss had picked up win after win, inching closer to a shot at the NXT Women's Championship. Wednesday saw her biggest test to date, and while she may not have passed it, she proved capable of hanging with the best female wrestler on the roster.

Bliss has made tremendous strides from her days as a fairy-like babyface, when she was as recognizable for her adorableness as anything she did in the ring. Now she is a fierce performer whose mat game has caught up with her facial expressions and body language. She is ready to take that leap into title contention.

While that may not happen in time for the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn special in August, expect Bliss to root herself in the title scene and not let go until she is wearing gold.

Loser: Zack Ryder

Sure, NXT television is taped weeks ahead of time—well before WWE Creative has any idea what it is doing for a given episode of Monday Night Raw.

Even with that in mind, it was interesting to see Zack Ryder, fresh off a strong victory on July 4 in which he pinned former WWE champion Sheamus, on the receiving end of a Gore from the returning Rhyno as if he were just another face on the NXT roster.

Whereas Buddy Murphy was spared the beatdown by bailing on the unforeseen attack by Rhyno, Ryder was forced to sell the explosive maneuver. As a valuable member of Raw and SmackDown, perhaps Long Island Iced Z should have been afforded the opportunity Murphy was.

Ryder's use in NXT has been puzzling. Unlike Tyson Kidd, who landed on the brand and enjoyed a main event run, working NXT Championship matches against Neville and competing against Sami Zayn in an outstanding match, Ryder was shoved into a tag team with the insufferable Mojo Rawley and jobbed out to every team coming down the pike.

The more Ryder is allowed to grow, evolve and win on main-roster shows, the more Triple H and NXT management will have to re-evaluate how he is portrayed on Wednesday nights.
