John Cena, Enzo and Cass vs. The Club Announced for WWE Battleground 2016
On Monday night, WWE announced that John Cena will team up with Enzo Amore and Big Cass to take on The Club at Battleground on July 24.
According to the Internet Wrestling Database, it's the first time Cena will wrestle in a tag team match at a pay-per-view since Survivor Series in 2014.
Putting the six wrestlers together in a match is not only a good way for Cena to continue his feud with AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, but it's also a great way for WWE to keep building Enzo and Cass as serious threats in the tag division.
In some cases, the WWE Universe doesn't initially warm up to NXT call-ups, while others are immediate hits out of the gate. The trajectories of Apollo Crews, Enzo and Cass offer a perfect illustration.
Crews, Enzo and Cass all debuted on the April 4 edition of Raw. Whereas Crews has been treading water in the months since, Enzo and Cass were a big deal as soon as they hit the stage:
Not even Enzo's concussion could halt their momentum. He received a massive ovation after making his return May 23:
Now, the pair is teaming up with Cena on a WWE PPV. Former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas believes they'll benefit in a big way:
The six-man tag team match is also a nice diversion for Cena and The Club until WWE does what many expect and brings up Finn Balor to reunite with Styles, Gallows and Anderson. The former NXT champion joked about all of the speculation in May:
Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura will be wrestling at NXT TakeOver: Back to Brooklyn on Aug. 20. The timing would be perfect for Balor to conclude his NXT career at TakeOver and then have a role in whatever The Club is doing at SummerSlam, which is the next night.
Since Balor is casting a large shadow, inserting Enzo and Cass into Cena's rivalry with The Club is a nice way to freshen things up before SummerSlam.
