Kevin Durant to Warriors: Klay Thompson Comments on Playing with Star SF

Joseph ZuckerJul 4, 2016

The 2015-16 season ended less than a month ago for the Golden State Warriors, but Klay Thompson is already itching to get back onto the court after his team snagged the most prized asset on this year's free-agent market.

In a piece on the Players' Tribune on Monday, Kevin Durant announced he will sign with the Warriors.

"The most exciting thing to me...is the potential explosiveness we will have on the offensive end," Thompson said, per CSN Bay Area's Ros Gold-Onwude. "We got one of the best scorers to ever play in this league joining already one of the most potent offensives of all time...gives me chills to think of the possibilities."

Picturing Durant on the floor with the Warriors is a scary sight:

The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears provided some of the machinations behind the scenes that helped Golden State land Durant, including Draymond Green's sales pitch:

"

We asked him how many championships do you think we can win with the way the team is now? How many championships can you win without us? How many do you think we can win together?

We told him he didn't have to change who he is. He doesn't have to change how he plays. We will get him shots. If he shot 40 percent from 3-point line contested, how would he shoot wide open?

"

One way in which Durant can be effective on the Warriors is with the pick-and-roll. According to NBA.com's player-tracking data, Golden State averaged 1.08 points per possession with Marreese Speights as the roll man and 1.06 points with Festus Ezeli in the same role.

Now imagine Thompson or Stephen Curry coming off picks set by Durant. Either combination could be potentially deadly, especially on pick-and-pops when Durant floats out to the three-point line.

Durant's drives into the paint will inevitably leave shooters open on the outside too. In that sense, Thompson should be a major beneficiary. Opposing defenses had a hard enough time covering Thompson over the last few years. Now, they'll have to worry about keeping a man on Durant at all times.

As intimidating as they seem on paper, the Warriors are bound to have an adjustment period as they accommodate Green, Durant, Thompson and Curry on the same court.

The Cleveland Cavaliers looked to have a historically dominant offensive team when they added LeBron James and Kevin Love two years ago. While they won the NBA title this year, the Cavs struggled to meet expectations in the early going.

The Miami Heat eventually became the league's best team after James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in 2010, but they experienced plenty of growing pains early on too, including James' bump into head coach Erik Spoelstra, which sparked conversation of Spoelstra's suitability with the franchise.

Steve Kerr has already won an NBA title as Golden State's head coach, and he helped the Warriors set a new regular-season wins record with 73 victories in 2015-16. His most difficult task to date in Golden State, though, will be figuring out how to distribute the ball between Durant, Green, Thompson and Curry in a way that maximizes their talents.
