WWE Battleground 2016: Predicting Match Card, Most Likely Swerves at PPV
Following the success and drama of WWE Money in the Bank, there is plenty of pressure on WWE to deliver a similarly impressive show at Battleground.
With only a couple of matches locked in so far, there's plenty of work to be done to ensure Battleground goes off with a bang.
Roman Reigns' suspension makes things even more difficult for WWE with its planning for the show, but with a few swerves up its sleeve, there's no doubting that Battleground can be the latest show in WWE's new era to surprise and please the fans.
Here's a look at what matches we know are taking place July 24, which ones could follow and the likely swerves on the night.
Predicting Match Card
1 of 4At the time of this writing, Battleground has only two matches confirmed for the show:
- Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
- Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
But, inevitably, there will be lots more big bouts thrown in and added to the card.
For example, expect AJ Styles vs. John Cena to take place for a second time, following Styles' controversial win at Money in the Bank.
The Miz will be back in action after sitting out Money in the Bank, but the identity of his challenger is yet to become clear.
Rusev vs. Titus O'Neil for the United States Championship also seems likely, as does The New Day vs. The Wyatt Family for the tag gold.
And in the women's division, we could see the first installment of Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte.
Swerve: Xavier Woods Begins the Destruction of New Day
2 of 4The New Day vs. The Wyatt Family was bound to be an intriguing feud anyway, but with the events of last Monday's Raw, it could lead to a spectacular swerve.
It was clearly apparent that Xavier Woods had become disturbed or even afraid of Bray Wyatt and his family, with some unusual behavior being displayed.
So could that lead to The New Day losing the tag titles at Battleground or, even worse, Xavier Woods beginning the destruction of the group by costing them the bout?
It could be that Woods, who is usually so active at ringside when Big E and Kofi Kingston are actively competing in the ring, is distracted or even just turns his back on the group.
Creeped out by Wyatt, it may well be the catalyst for The New Day's grip on the tag division to loosen.
Swerve: Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens to Be a No-Contest
3 of 4There's no way WWE is pulling down the curtain on Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens at Battleground.
This is a rivalry that deserves to end at one of WWE's big pay-per-views, so with SummerSlam on the horizon, WWE needs to find a way to make it roll on for another month.
So having their scheduled match for Battleground end in a no-contest would be a fitting way to do that.
You would expect it to be far more creative and interesting than a double count-out or something along those lines.
It could be that both men fail to make the count to get to their feet after a bruising battle, or simply that the fight spills out across the arena, which is never a bad thing.
But one man getting the win here wouldn't make sense ahead of a huge grudge match at SummerSlam, so having it finish as a no-contest makes plenty of sense.
Swerve: Roman Reigns' Heel Turn Is Completed
4 of 4It's been a slow road to becoming a heel for Roman Reigns, but recent events away from the ring could accelerate that to a point where he turns completely at Battleground.
The show will be his first appearance on WWE television since his 30-day suspension, and it's likely to intensify the heat on his shoulders following a pretty unsuccessful run when it comes to the popularity stakes.
So with fans set to be on Reigns' back even more, will WWE do what it should have done a while ago and turn Reigns at a big show?
It could be that Dean Ambrose sneaks a win against Seth Rollins to retain the title, or even pins Reigns. That would spark outrage from Reigns, who would tear into Ambrose and beat him all across the arena.
Beating down the company's top babyface in such a manner would solidify a heel turn. It's been on the cards for a while, and Battleground may be the setting for it to finally happen.
