Gomez Adds to Germany's Injury Woes
Sunday, July 3
As reported by Sky Sports News HQ, veteran forward Gomez on Saturday became the latest Germany star to suffer an injury during Euro 2016.
The Fiorentina man left the pitch during the penalty-shootout win over Italy after picking up a hamstring injury. He started a key attacking move that led to Germany's only goal in regulation earlier in the contest.
Per the report, midfielders Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger also picked up knocks against the Azzurri.
Of the trio, Gomez would be the biggest loss by default. Die Mannschaft have remarkable depth in the centre of the pitch, but in attack, manager Joachim Low has limited options. He has so far used Gomez as a traditional striker and Mario Gotze as a false nine, and with the exception of Thomas Muller, no one else in the squad has real experience playing as a striker.
Gomez scored in the wins over Northern Ireland and Slovakia, and he also played a key role in the tight contest against Italy. Germany will play the winner of the quarter-final fixture between Iceland and hosts France in the semi-finals on Thursday.
