NBA Summer League 2016: Rosters for Orlando, Utah and Las Vegas Teams

Rob GoldbergJul 2, 2016

While the NBA Summer Leagues don't count toward the regular season, they are an opportunity for younger players to improve against quality competition while teams get a chance to evaluate as many prospects as possible.

There are three leagues this year, with the biggest one set for Las Vegas. There are 24 teams competing in Sin City in an event that features 67 games over 11 days, which also includes a championship.

Before the big tournament begins, smaller showcases in Orlando and Utah will provide the players of 14 teams a chance to showcase their skills and hopefully make a roster.

Each organization has a different strategy when it comes to utilizing these summer sessions. Some load up the roster with undrafted free agents, hoping to find a diamond in the rough who can contribute for the main team during the regular season. Others want their younger players already on the roster to get additional experience before the games start to matter.

Although there are a number of interesting rosters throughout the three leagues, perhaps the most interesting is the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix has a pair of lottery picks it will send to Las Vegas in Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss, two raw but extremely talented power forwards. Not every European prospect makes it to the United States in time to participate in these leagues, but Bender explained his interest in self-improvement:

Both Bender and Chriss are considered high-risk, high-reward prospects so you never know what you can expect at the next level. However, it's extremely encouraging that they are willing to put the work in, starting with competing in the summer league.

This duo will join Devin Booker, Tyler Ulis and others on a team that you need to watch.

Meanwhile, arguably the most intriguing player involved in any of the squads is Michael Beasley, playing with the Houston Rockets. While most of the league will be filled with younger players just out of college, the former No. 2 overall draft pick is 27 years old and has already spent parts of eight seasons in the NBA. This is in addition to his time spent with the Shandong Golden Stars in the Chinese Basketball Association.

After averaging 12.8 points in 20 games for the Rockets this past season, it's clear the organization wants to see if he can keep it up and become a regular contributor.

Sam Vecenie of CBS Sports doesn't think he will see much of a challenge:

Although dominating these exhibitions doesn't guarantee success during the regular season, Beasley could go a long way toward solidifying his future.

With Ben Simmons, Brandon Ingram and other notable names likely to take part in the various leagues, there will be plenty to watch in the coming weeks.

Not all rosters have been officially announced, despite reports on specific players joining various teams around the league. Still, here are the latest rosters for squads set to compete in one of the three summer leagues.
