MiLB Player Makes Alert Diving Catch After Pop-Up Bounces off Miguel Sano's Head

Kyle NewportJun 30, 2016

This may not be as memorable as the infamous Jose Canseco play, but it did have a better result for the team in the field.

With runners on first and second with two out in the top of the fifth inning of Wednesday's game, Pawtucket Red Sox (the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) outfielder Justin Maxwell hit an infield pop-up that looked like it would end the inning with ease.

Rochester Red Wings (the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) pitcher Logan Darnell vacated the mound as his infielders converged. Ultimately, it was third baseman Miguel Sano (currently on rehab assignment) who took charge and camped under the sky-high pop-up.

Bizarrely, Sano missed the catch, and the ball bounced right off his noggin. Fortunately for Sano and the Red Wings, first baseman James Beresford had stayed nearby and was alert enough to make a play after the unexpected gaffe.

Even though they did not score any runs on this play, the Red Sox would go on to pull out a 3-2 victory.

Sano could wake up Thursday with a nasty headache.
