Arsenal Transfer News: Gabriel Barbosa Targeted, Latest Romelu Lukaku Rumours

Rory MarsdenJun 27, 2016

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for 19-year-old Santos forward Gabriel Barbosa after missing out on the signing of Leicester City's Jamie Vardy.

According to ESPN Brazil (via the Sun's Andrew Richardson), Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is eager to add another striker to his squad and has turned his attention to Brazil international Gabriel after Vardy signed a new contract with the Foxes.

Gabriel has revealed that he has offers from clubs in Europe but hinted that he may want to stay at Santos for a little longer, per Richardson: "Yes, I have offers from some of the big clubs in Europe that interest me, but that is for my parents and my employers but I am happy at Santos. That will sort itself out in time. Santos is my home, but we will make a calm decision."

Nicknamed Gabigol, the young forward has impressed in Brazil, earning his first cap for the national side earlier this year and being called up for the recent Copa America Centenario.

Per Richardson, he is also the subject of a £25 million bid from Fiorentina.

See below for some of his most eye-catching performances in the 2015-16 season:

Gabigol is not a traditional striker, often playing out wide as opposed to leading the line.

However, Wenger likely believes he can change into an out-and-out frontman at the Emirates Stadium, and Arsenal need more depth in their strike department.

Olivier Giroud is frustratingly inconsistent and is not a prolific enough goalscorer to propel Arsenal towards the Premier League title.

It would be a big risk to only bring in Gabriel to bolster the attacking line over the summer, but he has the skill set to fit in well in north London.

Arsenal would be well advised to try to sign Gabigol as well as another more experienced striker.

However, their pursuit of Everton's Romelu Lukaku has reportedly stalled—despite the Belgian wanting to move to Arsenal—because the Toffees' fee demands are too high, per football writer Emanuele Giulianelli:

Lukaku would be a reliable addition to the Gunners squad, as he has proved over the last four seasons that he can score consistently in the English top flight, per Squawka Dave:

While £50 million is a lot of money, it is unlikely Arsenal will find a proven goalscorer for much cheaper. At just 23 years old, Lukaku could be a long-term servant at the Emirates and is only likely to get better.

Signing both Lukaku and Gabriel would be a big statement from Arsenal and should improve their front line dramatically, but the north London side seem unlikely to stump up the cash for the former Chelsea man.
