WWE 2K17 is already seeing a ton of prerelease hype after announcing Goldberg's addition to the roster. Monday morning saw 2K Sports continue the build by releasing the game's cover, which features crossover star Brock Lesnar:
Lesnar, 38, previously appeared on the covers of WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth and WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain during his first run in sports entertainment. This is his first solo cover, having shared the spotlight with other Superstars on the aforementioned games.
The choice of Lesnar seems rather straightforward given how much WWE is banking on the former UFC heavyweight champion increasing its mainstream appeal.
Lesnar is set to make his return to mixed martial arts at July's UFC 200 pay-per-view against Mark Hunt. It will be his first bout since 2011, when diverticulitis forced him into an early retirement.
WWE agreed to a "one-off opportunity" for Lesnar to compete in UFC. He remains under contract with WWE and is scheduled to be part of August's SummerSlam pay-per-view. The former WWE champion has not been seen on the company's programming since defeating Dean Ambrose at WrestleMania 32 in April.
WWE 2K17 is set to release on Oct. 11, and 2K Sports appears to be beginning a hard promotional push.
It announced Goldberg as a preorder exclusive in May. The former WWE star's addition was seen as being similar to WWE 2K15's preorder exclusive of Sting, who eventually wound up making his in-ring debut for the company after years of speculation.
John Cena, the Ultimate Warrior and Sasha Banks were the first three names revealed for the standard roster. Banks was the most notable due to the controversy of her (as well as Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Bayley) being left out of WWE 2K16.
There has been no announcement on what new features will be added to WWE 2K17.
With Lesnar on the cover, it's possible there will be some sort of storyline-related mode for gamers to play through. WWE 2K16 offered a 2K Showcase of Stone Cold Steve Austin after featuring him on the cover. Cena was featured in one of the two showcases in WWE 2K15 when he was on the cover.
