Manchester United 2, VfL Wolfsburg 1. Recap

Manchester, England. On a cold rainy day, Manchester United were able to overcome a 2^nd half deficit and come back to defeat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1.

The reigning English Champions were able to dispose of the reigning German champions with some second half magic from United’s most decorated player, Ryan Giggs.

Dzeko put the visitors ahead in the 55^th minute with a perfectly placed header in the corner past Tomasz Kuszczak, who started ahead of Ben Foster who has been shaky in goal the past few weeks.

But the celebrations were short lived for Wolfsburg as four minutes later, Ryan Giggs free kick from just outside the box deflected off a Wolfsburg defender for the equalizing goal. It was Giggs 150^th goal for Manchester United, just the 9^th player in team history to achieve such a feat.

Wayne Rooney narrowly missed putting the home side ahead 3 minutes later, and then Giggs had a goal disallowed for offsides in the 69^th minute.  

Dzeko’s goal had jump started the United attack, and the home side was now creating all of the chances. When United are playing their attacking football such as this, it’s not a matter of if they score another goal, it’s when.

That moment came in the 77^th minute. Berbatov collected the ball in the box with his back to goal, passed to Giggs who found Carrick at the top of the box who rifled it home in the top right corner to give United the lead.

Wolfsburg had a half chance to tie it up in the 85^th minute, but Josua dragged the ball wide from 20 yards for their last real chance on goal for the game.

The victory gave 3 points to United as they sit atop of group B with 6 points while Wolfsburg is 2^nd on goal differential with 3 points.

 While it wasn’t the best performance United have put together this season, it was enough to get the job done and claim 3 vital points for the home side.

Manchester United next Champions league game is a visit to CSKA Moscow, who were 2-1 winners over Besiktas this evening.
