Germany vs. Slovakia Betting Odds Preview, Euro 2016 Round-of-16 Prediction

OddsShark.comJun 24, 2016

Germany is the biggest favorite of any team in the Euro 2016 round of 16 but will have a daunting matchup in the quarterfinals assuming they beat Slovakia on Sunday in Lille.

The Germans are listed as -233 chalk (bet $233 to win $100) on the three-way line at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark after earning two wins and a draw to take Group C, while Slovakia is an extra-large underdog following a win, loss and draw in Group B.

Match Odds: Germany -233, Slovakia +982, Draw +339 (Matchup Report)

Germany edged Poland to win Group C, taking the tiebreaker based on a bigger goal difference after each team finished with seven points. The two teams played to a scoreless draw when they met June 16, and they each earned 1-0 wins in their final games.

The difference for the Germans was a 2-0 victory against Ukraine combined with the Poles edging Northern Ireland 1-0 in the openers. That one extra goal proved to be pretty big.

For Slovakia, the expanded field of 24 teams, compared to 16 previously, helped them get into the round of 16 as one of four third-place teams to qualify. Of those sides, the Slovaks were probably the most impressive, although they played in one of the easier groups.

Slovakia lost to Group B winner Wales 2-1 in their opener and then defeated Russia 2-1 before finishing in a 0-0 draw with England in their finale Monday. The Three Lions could have won the group with a victory.

Slovakia making it to the round of 16 is a major accomplishment, and the team will face a much different Germany team than the one they upset 3-1 in an international friendly at WWK Arena in Augsburg on May 29.

The Germans lost 2-1 to Italy in the Euro 2012 semifinals, and they have enjoyed a lot more success than the Slovaks on this level with something on the line.

Even though the line on this game could not be much more lopsided, Slovakia should battle Germany hard and at least give them a competitive match.

However, consider the fact that the Germans are the +450 second choice to win the tourney while the Slovaks are longshots at +15000, and you’ll see what oddsmakers really think about the difference between them.

Germany will advance to the semis again, but it will not be as easy as everyone thinks.

Germany vs. Slovakia Prediction: 2-1 Germany
