Nike Recall Short-Cut Dresses to Be Worn by Female Tennis Stars During Wimbledon
Nike have recalled a number of dresses that were meant to be worn by female players at next week's Wimbledon, after qualifiers complained they were too revealing.
Per Mike Dickson in the Daily Mail, the American sportswear manufacturer asked for the dresses to be sent back to be altered, with at least 20 women in the main draw set to don the outfits at the 2016 tournament.
The New York Times' Ben Rothenberg provided images of Czech Republic player Lucie Hradecka wearing the dress at the qualifying event at Roehampton, London, which revealed the potential problems for players at the Championships at SW19:
Per Dickson, players also complained that the "dress flies up above the waistline and hampers their play."
He also relayed the email, marked as "VERY important," Nike sent out to their players requesting the dresses be returned: "We need to make a small change to your dresses per Wimbledon rules. Could you please bring them by the Nike Wimbledon House."
Along with 2014 Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard, former British No. 1 Laura Robson is set to wear the dress at the All England Club—which has a strict all-white dress code.
World No. 1 and reigning champion Serena Williams is also sponsored by Nike but is set to wear a slightly altered version of the dress at Wimbledon 2016, which "features a higher neckline but is similarly short on the leg," per the Telegraph.
The legendary American—a six-time winner at Wimbledon—will look to finally join Steffi Graf on 22 career Grand Slam titles by triumphing again in SW19 in 2016, having lost in the final of both major tournaments so far this year.
