Tyler ConwayJun 22, 2016

Isaiah Core, who played Division III basketball at LaGrange College, was shot and killed by a police officer Wednesday morning after a high-speed car chase.

Carol Robinson of AL.com reported the incident, which took place in Shelby County, Alabama.

Core was 20.

According to the police report, officers began following the vehicle Core was driving after noticing it was moving "suspiciously" in a Birmingham apartment complex. Core then left and entered a highway, subsequently speeding off when officers attempted to pull him over for an alleged traffic violation, leading to a high-speed chase.

The vehicle eventually pulled off at an exit, at which point police told Core and an unnamed passenger to exit the car. Shortly thereafter, "there was a deliberate movement of the suspect's vehicle backward in an attempt to injure officers, and a Shelby County deputy fired at the vehicle, striking the driver," according to the officer's account, per Robinson.

"While I realize the circumstances under which Mr. Core died, I cannot help but wish his family my sincere condolences,'' Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego said. "I wish them peace as they struggle to find resolution with their loss."

Police later determined the SUV Core was driving was stolen and also contained a stolen firearm.

Core played football and basketball at Huffman High School in Alabama. He appeared in 12 games at guard, starting seven, for LaGrange College in 2013-14.

"It's sad to hear, knowing the potential he had,'' LaGrange College head basketball coach Kendal Wallace told AL.com. "He just never could get on the right track to make the right decisions to stay on the right path."

Core was previously arrested on drug and gun charges in April.
