Cavaliers Parade 2016: Date, Location and More

The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched the 2015-16 NBA title with a Game 7 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena on Sunday, and now they get to party with a city that just watched its first big league sports championship since 1964.

Marc J. Spears of ESPN’s The Undefeated shared some of the details for the Cavaliers’ upcoming arrival and parade:

The celebration will kick off Monday, when the Cavaliers return to the city in triumphant fashion.

While Spears noted the parade and rally will take place Wednesday in downtown Cleveland, the exact route, television information and schedule have not been announced. NBA TV broadcast the Warriors' championship parade last year and will likely do so for the Cavaliers on Wednesday.

As if there were any doubt Cleveland was ready to enjoy the win, Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press pointed out it didn’t even have a parade for the 1964 Browns that won the city's last major championship.

LeBron James sounded ready for the long-awaited festivities after the victory Sunday, per Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal:

The Cavaliers earned the parade with a 93-89 victory on the road in Game 7. James was incredible in the decisive contest with a triple-double that featured 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Kyrie Irving added 26 points and also hit arguably the biggest shot of the entire series when he drilled a three-pointer in the final minute to break an 89-89 tie.

The Game 7 win was a back-and-forth affair that encapsulated the momentum swings of the series, but it was also the only contest that was decided by single digits:

James won the Finals MVP award by averaging 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.3 blocks per game. According to ESPN Stats & Info, he led every player on both teams in all five categories during the Finals.

This Cavaliers team will go down in history long after Wednesday’s parade. Outside of breaking the curse on Cleveland sports, the Cavaliers beat a Warriors team that set the NBA record for the most victories in a regular season with 73. Golden State also lost only two games at Oracle Arena during the regular season, but Cleveland managed to beat it in Oakland in Games 5 and 7 while facing elimination.

James said in Sports Illustrated he was returning to Northeast Ohio to win a ring for the area after four seasons in Miami. He and the fans will get to celebrate a fulfilled promise Wednesday.
