Buddy Hield Comments on Potential Fit with Lakers Ahead of 2016 NBA Draft

The prevailing thought for the Los Angeles Lakers' 2016 NBA draft plan seems to be they'll take either Brandon Ingram or Ben Simmons at No. 2 overall, but Buddy Hield believes he could be the team's pick.

Hield worked out for the Lakers for the second time Saturday, and the former Oklahoma star said he is the player Los Angeles needs to replace Kobe Bryant, per Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News. 

“This is what the franchise needs,” Hield said. “The Lakers are losing Kobe and they need a scorer. So why not call on me to fill in their spot?” 

Hield went on to dismiss mock drafts that have him somewhere in the top 10, as opposed to as high as second overall, per Medina.

“Everybody has their opinions on where they can go, but most of those guys never have touched a basketball,” Hield said. “[General managers] know what they’re looking for and which players suit their franchise the best.”

The Lakers already have two promising guards in Jordan Clarkson (a restricted free agent) and D'Angelo Russell, but with Golden State assistant Luke Walton set to take over as head coach, the team needs shooters like Hield.

Los Angeles ranked last in the NBA in three-point percentage while taking the 13th-most trifectas in 2015-16. Hield shot 45.7 percent from three last season while averaging 25.0 points per game, so he would be an excellent fit as a perimeter scorer who can space the floor in Walton's system.

However, Ingram (18) and Simmons (19) are younger and have more upside as all-around scorers, so they are better picks at No. 2. Still, whoever takes the 22-year-old Hield will get an immediate contributor.
