US Open Leaderboard 2016: Updating Results and Standings for Saturday
Stop if you've heard this narrative before: Dustin Johnson has the lead at a major and there's no way he can mess this up.
That's why they play 72 holes in golf.
Johnson, who has had trouble in the past maintaining leads in big-time tournaments, is tied at the top with Andrew Landry at four-under par. Lee Westwood is right behind the two Americans at three under, followed by a three-way tie for fourth place.
Here's a look at the full leaderboard.
Is This Where Dustin Johnson Breaks Through?
One year ago, also at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, Johnson suffered one of the biggest collapses in golf history.
Now he gets a chance to right that wrong.
Johnson bogeyed the first hole but rebounded fairly well the rest of the way. He sank two birdie putts on two par threes (Nos. 6 and 13) to get, and stay, at four-under par.
He's in position to claim that elusive first-ever major title, and Johnson feels comfortable halfway through the tournament.
"It was a long day today, but I felt like I played really solid all day for all 36 holes. I drove it really well. Hit a lot of great iron shots," Johnson said, per Steve DiMeglio of USA Today. "Felt like I rolled the putter really nicely too. So very pleased with how it went today."
Johnson's game has always been the same. He's one of the best drivers in the game, but when it comes to the putter, that's another story. He hit 16 greens in regulation in the first round and began the second round with nine straight.
He's found the green 25 straight times dating back to the back nine of Round 1.
"The greens...they're so hard to putt," Johnson said, per DiMeglio. "No matter how close you are to the hole, it's just, they're tough to putt. I hit so many good putts today that I thought were going in, and burned the edge or lip out. But that's just how it goes. I mean, these greens are tough."
But Johnson can make up for everything with one major win. It would be quite the narrative should he win, but he has to make sure he gets to position for a chance.
