Washington Redskins: Just How Hot is Jim Zorn's Seat?

Jarrett CarterOct 1, 2009

Perhaps you’ve heard that Daniel Snyder is an impatient egomaniac, and as such, very few coaches under his tenure have lasted more than two or three years. Only a legend, Joe Gibbs, has proven immune to Snyder’s wrath.

So now it’s Jim Zorn’s turn, and with a critical game against Tampa Bay looming, most of the city is unsure of whether Washington can win an save the coach’s job for another week. Let’s check out what the Internet has to say about Zorn’s job security.

"Zorn is 9-10 as a head coach, and, I’m sorry, I need more than 19 games to draw a conclusion here. Apparently, so does Snyder, and lucky for Zorn. But Zorn needs to reward that patience by doing something extraordinary, and he needs to do it now.

In short, he needs to blow the lid off Sunday’s game with Tampa Bay.

I’m not talking about just beating the Bucs; I’m talking about beating them with big plays that make it to the 11 o’clock highlights. The only thing worse than losing is losing while you bore everyone to death." – Clark Judge, CBSSports.com

"Charley Casserly knows all about Snyder’s old quick trigger. Snyder fired Casserly, then the Redskins’ general manager, just months after Snyder took control of the team in 1999, a move that Snyder later admitted was a mistake to Casserly himself. The Redskins have been through quite a few crises since then, but none were as captivating as the current one is. And proving that the N.F.L. makes for strange bedfellows, Casserly says he approves of how Snyder is handling this one.

'I don’t believe in in-season moves,' Casserly said Monday morning. 'Anytime you have to contemplate a move, you have to ask, Do we have a better alternative here, and do we have a long-term solution to the problem? That’s the thought process you go through if you make a move. It’s rare that an in-season move works.'"– Judy Battista, New York Times

"The loss to the Detroit Lions will be difficult to overcome. The Redskins still have time to right the ship, but Dan Snyder’s not a patient man. If you fire Zorn, you also lose your playcaller and quarterbacks coach. I’d like to see Snyder give Zorn a full second season to see if there’s any progress, but that could be wishful thinking. If the Redskins head into the division game against the Eagles in late October with a 2-4 record, I think Snyder will seriously think about making a move. It’s not going to help but it might make him feel better." – Matt Mosley, ESPN.com

Not surprising, the media temperature on Zorn is cautiously warm, probably because they so revile Daniel Snyder. But when teams are bad, someone has to go. If fans won’t force the owner’s hand, and the players’ contracts make them virtually immovable, the team might as well target the guy with the lowest amount of dollar signs attached to his departure.
