Canadian Grand Prix 2016 Qualifying: Saturday's F1 Results, Times, Final Grid

Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for Formula One's 2016 Canadian Grand Prix with a magnificent lap of one minute, 12.812 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec.

The Englishman's 53rd pole of his career, and fifth of the season, came at the expense of Nico Rosberg, who finished the day 0.062 seconds behind his Mercedes team-mate. 

Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari secured third spot, with Daniel Ricciardo forced to settle for fourth place.

A shunt into the barrier 10 minutes from the end of the third practice session ensured Renault's Kevin Magnussen would not take part in Saturday's qualifying, with the Danish driver set to start from the back of the grid.

All drivers were forced to lay down multiple out laps in the buildup to qualifying pace in order to reach optimal tyre temperature, as world champion Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Rosberg were joined on track by Vettel as the session got under way.

The battle for first place was expected to be a tighter contest than previous races, with Ferrari closing the gap to Mercedes since the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago.

With five minutes to go until the end of Q1, drops of rain began to appear on track, with Felipe Massa and Max Verstappen both outbraking themselves into the final chicane. 

Rio Haryanto suffered a puncture after he clattered the wall at Turn 4 to bring an end to his session as the yellow flags disrupted the final fast laps of several drivers looking to move away from elimination. 

However at the top of the timing charts, it was Rosberg who drew first blood as he ended Q1 at the summit with a time of 1:13.714, per F1:

The second qualifying session was soon red flagged after Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz crashed into the wall at the tricky Turn 14, known as the "Wall of Champions" due to the victims it has punished. 

Split by 18 thousandths of a second, the Mercedes pair were in a league of their own at the head of the pack. Red Bull's Ricciardo—arriving on the back of a second spot on the podium in Monaco—was their closest challenger, albeit almost five-tenths of a second behind.

The fight for pole position appeared to be between the Merc team-mates after Q2 action, per F1:

Hamilton staked his claim to lead the front row with a provisional pole time of 1:12.812, with Rosberg trailing by just 0.062 seconds after their first flying lap, while 18-year-old driver Verstappen moved himself up to third.

Vettel promoted himself to third in the standings with his final lap, but neither Hamilton nor Rosberg were able to better their last lap times as they finished one-two. 

Hamilton's fastest lap of the session secured the fifth pole position of his career around the circuit and gives him the best chance of securing 25 points from Sunday's race.
