Carol SchramJun 9, 2016

The San Jose Sharks stayed alive to force Game 6 in the Stanley Cup Final with a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.

The Penguins were looking to bring home their fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history, but a wild first period did them in.

The Sharks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 2:53 of the game on goals by Brent Burns and Logan Couture, but Pittsburgh tied the game by the 5:06 mark with two goals in 22 seconds, from Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin.

With the game all even, Melker Karlsson scored what proved to be the game winner with 5:13 to play in the opening frame. Joe Pavelski capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:20 left on the clock in the third period.

In between, goaltender Martin Jones kept the Sharks alive. He set a personal playoff record, facing 46 shots, and made numerous spectacular saves to preserve his team's lead while the Sharks managed just 22 shots on Matt Murray.

Hordes of fans in Pittsburgh go home disappointed, but their team still has a 3-2 series lead and will get its second chance to win the 2016 Stanley Cup on Sunday in San Jose. The Sharks will try to win their second straight and force Game 7.
