Lyoness Open 2016: Thursday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Adrian Otaegui topped the leaderboard on Thursday at the 2016 Lyoness Open in Austria after carding an unblemished eight-under 64.

Bjorn Akesson sits two shots behind with six under while Gary Stal and Zander Lombard sit another shot further back.

Thursday Recap

Otaegui got his tournament off to an electric start on Thursday as he racked up eight birdies in the first round.

After picking up a shot on the third, the Spaniard carded three successive birdies to finish off the front nine and did so again when he reached the 14th hole.

The 23-year-old rounded out his first day with one last birdie at the par-three 18th after an excellent drive afforded him a simple putt, per the European Tour:

Otaegui was happy with his performance according to the tour's official website:

I'm hoping now I can play four days in the same way so that's the main goal.

Of course I'm very pleased. I played well from the beginning until the end and didn't make too many mistakes.

The course is pretty hard and it's not easy to get the ball close to the pin so I'm pretty pleased with it.

Akesson also had an excellent day on the fairway as he picked up seven birdies and dropped just one shot at the 17th.

As for Stal, he could have enjoyed a share of the lead if not for a bogey on his first hole—the 10th—and two on his back nine at the second and seventh.

Nevertheless, he was evidently pleased with his round, particularly after making his second eagle of the day at the fourth:

Per the European Tour, he said: "I have found my game so I'm very happy. It's not every day you get two eagles in the same day—I holed out on the 15th after one bounce and on the second one I holed a 10-foot putt."

Defending champion Chris Wood will be somewhat disappointed with his round of 71, which was higher than any of the scores he produced on the way to winning last year.

He had got off to a promising start as he was three under after 13 holes:

However, three bogeys in his last five including a shot into the water prevented him from contesting the top places on the leaderboard.

There's still three more days for Wood to reel in the likes of Otaegui if he can produce the form he displayed last year.

If Otaegui continues as he has, though, there'll be no catching him.
