Hosts France will get UEFA Euro 2016 underway against Romania at the Stade de France on Friday.

Naturally, the home nation are favourites in this Group A opener, but Romania is a team that always seems to pose a problem or two at major international tournaments.

Still, manager Anghel Iordanescu won't find it easy to quell a French forward line featuring irrepressible Atletico Madrid goal-getter Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann is the man to watch up front, but the real strength of the French lies in a midfield patrolled expertly by Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi.

Juventus ace Pogba is the maestro, a skilled and intelligent playmaker who fuses imposing physical power with wonderful technical quality.

Pogba is the star, but unheralded Paris Saint-Germain link-man Matuidi may be more significant. He's a true workhorse who makes his influence known in every phase of the game, and his tireless runs knit each passage of play together for the French.

Controlling Matuidi won't be easy for a Romania defence also worried about Griezmann's cerebral and devilish off-the-ball movement. Napoli centre-back Vlad Chiriches isn't a regular starter at club level, but he'll be under an unforgiving spotlight in Saint-Denis.

However, that will be nothing compared to the pressure felt by Arsenal centre-forward Olivier Giroud as he prepares to lead the line for the hosts. The 29-year-old has had a rough time of it recently, notably being booed by his own fans more than once.

It's a situation fellow attacker Griezmann recently frowned upon, according to French source RMC (h/t ESPN FC's Mark Rodden): "Those who whistled Olivier Giroud weren't hurting only him but also us as well."

Griezmann has a point, because a confident Giroud can find the net for his country, and, perhaps more importantly, combine well with an ultra-talented supporting cast. There aren't many better link players than the Arsenal man, whose deft touches and clever knock-downs often create goals.
