Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Andre Gomes and Paul Pogba Rumours

Rory MarsdenJun 9, 2016

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes but will face competition from Juventus, who see the Portugal international as a potential replacement for Red Devils target Paul Pogba.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via the Daily Express' James Gray), Los Che value Gomes, 22, at €50-60 million (£39.3-£47.2 million) and new United boss Jose Mourinho is "a big fan" of his compatriot. The Manchester outfit are also being linked with a £78 million deal for Pogba.

It is highly unlikely United are looking to buy both Pogba and Gomes, but they would face a battle for the latter with Juve if, as Gazzetta reported, the former ends up moving to Real Madrid for more than €120 million (£94.4 million).

Given United's position down the European powerhouse pecking order and Real's status as UEFA Champions League winners, the Santiago Bernabeu looks a far more likely destination for Pogba, 23, than Old Trafford—his former home.

Italian football writer David Amoyal believes Pogba is set to stay at Juve:

However, if the Frenchman does leave, Juve would immediately have even more muscle in the transfer market and be serious contenders for Gomes' signature.

According to Gray, Mourinho will have £200 million to spend this summer to bolster the squad at Old Trafford, and the fact he shares an agent, Jorge Mendes, with Gomes could give United the edge in the race for the youngster.

United certainly need to strengthen their midfield, and if they cannot sign Pogba, Gomes would be a worthy alternative.

Michael Carrick, 34, remains United's best central midfielder, something the Telegraph's James Ducker feels is a major concern for the Old Trafford club:

The Red Devils need a long-term replacement who can also take the burden of responsibility from Carrick, and Gomes is a prime candidate.

He has been at Valencia for two campaigns, the first of them on loan from Benfica, and although "his form suffered as [Los Che] endured a hugely disappointing 2015-16 campaign" he enjoyed "an excellent first season with the Spanish club," per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan.

Per Valencia-based outlet Super Deporte (via Corrigan), he recently described Mourinho as "a great coach, no doubt about that."

The lure of the Portuguese manager could swing Gomes' decision in United's favour if he decides to leave Spain.
