DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony is particularly pleased for the five college stars among the 2016 squad:
For some, being named to the select team is a stepping stone to playing for the national team.
Golden State Warriors stars Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green were both members of the 2014 select team ahead of the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and they're among the finalists for the 2016 Olympics squad. The 2012 select team featured eight players—DeMarcus Cousins, DeMar DeRozan, Paul George, Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson and John Wall—who are currently members of Team USA.
Especially with Gregg Popovich taking over for Mike Krzyzewski as head coach of Team USA following the Olympics, those on the select team will have a great opportunity to make an early impression ahead of the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Popovich will oversee the select team this summer.
The select team will train with Team USA from July 18-21 in Las Vegas.
