French Open 2016: Wimbledon Predictions After Djokovic vs. Murray Results

Rob BlanchetteJun 6, 2016

Novak Djokovic created history at the 2016 French Open on Sunday, completing a career Grand Slam of tennis titles when he defeated Andy Murray at Roland Garros in Paris.

The world No. 1 lost the first set as the British powerhouse played his best tennis, but Djokovic came back to win the title 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Eurosport UK confirmed the moment when Djokovic took his place among the legends of the sport:

Spain's Garbine Muguruza claimed the women's crown on Saturday, sweeping past Serena Williams with style and panache.

Muguruza beat the defending champion 7-5, 6-4 and heads into Wimbledon confident after reaching the final in 2015. With a Grand Slam championship under her belt, the Venezuela-born ace will believe the grass-court showpiece in London is hers to capture at the next attempt.

Djokovic Looking To Add Fourth Wimbledon Crown

Murray will wonder what he has to do to stay on the coattails of Djokovic in his current form. The Scot was excellent in the opening set at Roland Garros, only to be blown away by the tornado of the Serbian's majesty.

The Brit has continued to perform well at his home Grand Slam tournament over many years, but the gap between him and Djokovic was apparent on Sunday.

Murray admitted he now needs to rest ahead of Wimbledon after a punishing schedule on clay.

According to BBC Sport, the Scottish superstar said:

"

I have never had a clay-court season like that one, never won that many matches.

I need to rest and allow my body to recover. ...

I played in such difficult conditions over the past couple of weeks - heavy slow, physical matches.

I need to recover a bit before getting back on the grass and training again.

"

In contrast, Djokovic will travel to south London with a spring in his step. Murray appeared to have marked the Serb's card early in the final, but the world No. 1 moved through the gears like only he can.

The Daily Mail's Martin Samuel called Djokovic the greatest of all tennis players, per ESPN's tennis analyst Brad Gilbert:

Muguruza hinted at a new dawn in the women's game, as she beat a depleted Williams in France. The American looked off the pace while the Spanish entity powered past her best efforts on the day.

The 22-year-old looked athletic and dominant as she captured the title, and she will be the favourite to go one step better than last time and win at Wimbledon.

Muguruza is a test for any top player on grass, but she now appears ready to battle Williams to be the best in the world.

"I'm pretty shocked still," Muguruza told reporters, per Ravi Ubha of CNN. "I think I've got to take my time and enjoy because with tennis players, it goes so fast. For Spanish people, this is the tournament. When you're a kid and practice on clay, you're always, 'Oh, I wish I could win Roland Garros.'"

The Spaniard's huge serve will make her a formidable opponent at Wimbledon, and if the surface is baked ahead of the tournament by the summer sun, she will prevail and win back-to-back Grand Slam events.

Williams looked unhappy during the rain-affected tournament at Roland Garros and will need to engage her powers of recovery to fight the younger athlete.

If Williams has lost her edge ahead of Wimbledon, she will not be able to live with Muguruza's current standard.

The Spaniard has ripped the mantle away from the veteran ahead of the sport's most prestigious championship and will not be denied at Wimbledon.
