Klay Thompson Jokes Warriors Were Better Than Showtime Lakers After Game 2

Thomas DuffyJun 6, 2016

After Sunday night’s blowout win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Golden State Warriors stars Draymond Green and Klay Thompson addressed a question about being one of the best teams ever.

Green downplayed it.

"I think it's all subjective," he said. "To say we're better than the Showtime Lakers, how can you say that? We could never play them.”

That’s when the usually subdued Thompson chimed in: “We were better than the Showtime Lakers.”

The entire room filled with laughter. Thompson’s father, Mychal, was of course a center for Los Angeles from 1987 to 1991.

The elder Thompson won two titles—but he never won 73 games.

Update from Tuesday, June 7

As it turns out, Mychal Thompson agrees with his son's comment, for two main reasons.

He said on Monday, "Two things make me think they would beat us. Their defense—their team defense—is as good as ours was. They really play great team defense," according to USA Today (via Yahoo Sports).

Thompson then added, "And number two: three-point shooting. We shot eight a game, they shoot eight a quarter. If we played them, they would outscore us 50-16 in threes. So do the math from there."

He does make some good points.

NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson—who knows a little something about the Showtime Lakers—does not agree, however. The five-time NBA champion weighed in on sports' hottest new debate as well:

It would be a great matchup—that's for sure.
