French Open 2016 Results: Men's Final Score and Early Wimbledon Predictions

Tom SunderlandJun 5, 2016

Novak Djokovic stormed back from a set down to beat Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the French Open final on Sunday and finally complete a non-calendar Grand Slam in dramatic fashion.

The Serb suffered defeat in three of the previous four finals at Roland Garros, but he rode through early adversity to beat Murray over four sets and finally clinch his first major victory in Paris.

On Saturday, Garbine Muguruza stunned Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 to also take her maiden crown at Roland Garros, as well as it being her first Grand Slam title at just 22 years of age.

Another French Open is in the books, and attention now turns to Wimbledon, which gets underway on June 27, and fans have a great chance of seeing the same two champions emerge once again.

Djokovic Super Slam in Sight

Djokovic completed the non-calendar Grand Slam on Sunday.

Not only has Djokovic now won every Grand Slam on the circuit, but he's well on his way to completing the heralded Super Slam (also known as a calendar Grand Slam) after maintaining a 100 percent record in the majors so far this year.

Eurosport UK confirmed Sunday's win also meant Djokovic became just the third player in history to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time:

Greater bounties lie ahead for the veteran, though, as Bet365 illustrated his ridiculous success at the majors in recent years, with two of his three Wimbledon crowns having come in 2014 and 2015:

In fact, the 29-year-old has now won five of the last six major tournaments held and made the final in each, providing some good omens for what may come of his Wimbledon campaign this year.

Djokovic has thundered to victory in each of the last two championships at SW19, defeating Roger Federer in both, and should he keep up his momentum in London later this month, a perfect 2016 and a calendar Grand Slam are in sight.

Predicted Men's Champion: Novak Djokovic

Muguruza Makes Amends at Wimbledon

Muguruza poses with her French Open title in Paris.

There was something of a personal storyline running throughout Muguruza's odds-defying win over Williams on Saturday, owed to the fact it was the American who beat her the last time they met—at Wimbledon 2015.

With vengeance for that Wimbledon defeat already hers, Muguruza's quest to triumph in London is now a more professional one, but FiveThirtyEight's Carl Bialik noted Williams is still the tournament favourite if fit:

Saturday's upset helped fuel the notion there's space for a new generation on the women's circuit. Speaking after Saturday's win, Muguruza insisted there was a sense of belief in her play, per Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press.

"I thought about it," Muguruza said. "I thought about it yesterday. I'm like, 'Come on. ... You can do it.' When you see people that are winning, and there's new faces, (it) makes you think, like, 'I can be one of those faces.'"

If Williams—35 in September—is on the decline as some have suggested, Muguruza seems as likely as any other to challenge in her stead at SW19, as she already made the final in just her fourth attempt last year.

Predicted Women's Champion: Garbine Muguruza
