Predictions
Returning to the friendly confines of the SAP Center should result in good fortune for the Sharks. After letting two games get away from them in Pittsburgh, they needed to come back to San Jose and protect their home ice.
That's exactly what they did. With Pittsburgh up 2-1 in the third period, Joel Ward's snipe from the middle of the zone found its way past Matt Murray to tie the game. Then, it took almost 13 minutes, but Joonas Donskoi's game-winning goal in overtime has given the Sharks life.
There's now reason to believe the Sharks can tie this series before heading back to Pittsburgh and go into their road game with a legitimate chance at gaining a series lead.
The Sharks would be in a much better position had a few bounces gone their way in Games 1 and 2. While San Jose has been solid, this series has shown a clear contrast in franchise Stanley Cup experience. The Penguins have been in this position before. Not only do they how to get here, but they know how to win in clutch situations.
Look no further than Game 2.
Normally, that wouldn't matter with two rookie goaltenders starting on opposite sides, but Murray has grown up quickly and played well in this postseason. In short, he's made more plays than Martin Jones up until the final minutes.
The Pittsburgh offense was on the attack once again in Game 3. The Penguins fired off 41 shots, only to see Jones save 39 of them. Given that the Sharks were facing a must-win situation, Jones had one of his best performances of the postseason and made the saves necessary in the third period and overtime to preserve the victory.
He learned that clutch play from watching Kings goalie Jonathan Quick while serving as his backup during Los Angeles' 2014 Stanley Cup run.
"Just watching him throughout the playoffs, he competes on everything," Jones said, per Joe McDonald of ESPN.com. "That's the biggest thing you can take away when you watch him play."
This series has been close the entire way. Three games decided by one goal each, two of them going to overtime. It's a matter of which team can make the most plays at the end, and that was Pittsburgh for the last two games. Now that San Jose knows how to win, and win at home, there's no reason why the Sharks can't take this series back to Pittsburgh tied 2-2.
