Epsom Derby 2016 Results: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish
Pat Smullen won his maiden Epsom Derby title on Saturday, riding atop the Dermot Weld-trained Harzand, who overcame an injury scare earlier in the day to win.
At 13/2, Harzand finished ahead of Aidan O'Brien duo US Army Ranger—the odds-on favourite—and Idaho.
With a purse of £1,545,000, the 2016 Derby was "the richest race ever run in the UK," according to Epsom Downs Racecourse's official Twitter account.
It captured the winner of the showpiece flat race:
Here are the race results and the horses' respective starting odds:
| 1 | Harzand | Pat Smullen | 13/2 |
| 2 | US Army Ranger | Ryan Moore | 7/2 |
| 3 | Idaho | Seamie Heffernan | 14/1 |
Prior to the race, the focus was on US Army Ranger and Wings of Desire, the latter ridden by Frankie Dettori in pursuit of what would have been his second successive Epsom title, while Harzand's chances were cast into doubt when he lost a shoe and was bleeding from the foot as a result.
The pair were restricted to the back of the field from the outset as Ulysses and Port Douglas headed the pack early on.
Into the final straight, it was Idaho pushing alongside Harzand while US Army Ranger steadily crept alongside.
The trio pulled away from the field in the final furlong, and Harzand moved clear of his rivals to cross the line.
Channel 4 Racing captured the moment:
Smullen hailed the colt's efforts in holding off the favourite, who was ridden by two-time Derby champion Ryan Moore:
Trainer Weld reflected on the effort needed to get Harzand racing after his initial worries:
Harzand—who won the Ballysax Stakes and Blackwater Maiden in Ireland prior to his victory here—looks to have an exciting future ahead of him after such a strong run.
As for Dettori and Moore, they'll have to wait until next year as they each resume their hunt for a third Epsom title.
