Williams vs. Muguruza: Score, Highlights from French Open Women's Final 2016
Fourth seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain has stunned No. 1 Serena Williams to win the 2016 French Open by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
As Williams took her third shot at tying Steffi Graf's record of 22 Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, 22-year-old Muguzura dished out her second-career win over Serena at Roland Garros after shocking her 6-2, 6-2 in the second round back in 2014.
The hard-hitting Muguruza matched Williams' power throughout the match, holding control with early breaks in the first set, then staying calm in the second as her chance to make history drew near.
Playing her fourth match in four days, the 34-year-old Williams was rumored to be suffering from an adductor issue, but did not look conspicuously hampered in the match. Two excellent players went toe-to-toe and on this day, the upstart emerged supreme.
The win is Muguruza's first Grand Slam title, in just her second Slam final appearance. She lost to Williams in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2015.
