United States vs. Colombia Betting Odds Preview, Copa America Prediction

OddsShark.comJun 2, 2016

The two sides with the best odds of capturing first place in Group A will face off in Friday night's Copa America Centenario opener. The United States leads Group A betting as slim +140 favorites but are winless in three straight against Colombia, who closely trail at +150 to win the group.

Match Odds: United States +170, Colombia +175, Draw +215 (Matchup Report)

The United States returns to the Copa America for the first time since 2007 with respectable +800 odds of winning the tournament for the first time at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. The Americans have won six straight games on home turf but must overcome poor historical records both at this tournament and in recent dates with Colombia.

Team USA scored just two total goals in three straight losses at the 2007 Copa America and are a dismal 1-1-4 in their past six games against Colombia, including tournament losses in 2007 and 1995.

The Americans dominated in their past four outings, keeping clean sheets in three while outscoring opponents by a 12-1 margin. However, they must now face a high-scoring Colombia side that has tallied three goals in each of their past three games, attracting interest as a dark-horse candidate at this year's tournament.

Since gaining important experience with a quarterfinal finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Colombia has shown steady improvement and presents a serious threat to the favored Americans throughout the group stage.

In addition to the dogfight atop the Group A odds, Los Cafeteros' recent strong play also leaves them closely trailing the United States on the Copa America odds at +900.

But while Colombia has recently rewarded bettors with victories, they have come largely against sides that sit well back of their position at No. 3 on the FIFA World Rankings.

The Colombians came away with a 3-1 win in a March date against No. 13 Ecuador but wrapped up 2015 with shutout losses to top-ranked Argentina and No. 9 Uruguay and had to settle for draws in clashes with defending Copa America champion Chile and in two matchups with No. 48 Peru.

With a loss creating uncertainty in the immediate future for both these sides, a tight, disciplined match is expected, which could keep scoring to a minimum on Friday night.

Prediction: United States vs. Colombia Prediction: 1-1 Draw
