Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Paul Pogba, Andre Gomes Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenMay 30, 2016

Super agent Jorge Mendes is reportedly "convinced" Valencia star Andre Gomes will end up with Manchester United to work under another of his clients, Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, the transfer rumours linking Paul Pogba with a move away from Juventus won't stop, with the latest reports saying Mourinho wants to bring the Frenchman back to Old Trafford.

According to SuperDeporte (h/t the Daily Express' James Cambridge), the strong relationship between Mendes and Mourinho will be a major factor in the deal for Gomes, amid rumours Juventus are also eyeing the Portugal international.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t the Daily Star's Alex Harris) has reported that Juventus are unwilling to meet his £30 million asking price―opening the door for United to swoop.

Per the report, the Italian giants made a £22.8 million offer that Valencia declined, and Juventus are not expected to improve their bid. United could make a move, and with little competition for his signature, the 22-year-old could be on his way to Old Trafford.

Per Sky Sports' Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are ongoing:

The Portugal international was one of the few bright spots for Valencia during the 2015-16 campaign, impressing with his consistency and versatility.

Gomes is an excellent playmaker with great passing ability and quick feet, and while he's not much of a scoring threat, his contributions in the attacking third go beyond the stat sheet.

Like Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan, Gomes' passing opens up tons of space for team-mates, and his ability to distribute the ball is vital in starting attacks. Here's a look at some of his highlights:

Gomes hasn't done enough in his brief career to warrant the £30 million price tag, but the potential is certainly there, and the price of young talent is as high as it's ever been. Add to that the presence of Mendes, who represents both Gomes and Mourinho, and a deal becomes even more likely.

Elsewhere, Juventus remain adamant Pogba won't leave Turin this summer, and on Sunday, manager Massimiliano Allegri made it clear the star midfielder is not for sale during an interview with Rai (h/t Gianluca Di Marzio's David Amoyal): "Pogba? He is staying."

But despite those persistent reports, the British press continues to speculate. The Times (h/t the Independent's Jack de Menezes) has reported that the Bianconeri have "informally" put the 23-year-old on the transfer market, alerting the likes of United, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

According to the report, Mourinho wants to build his United squad around the powerful midfielder, who bounced back from a rough start to the 2015-16 campaign to establish himself as one of Europe's top central players.

Pogba had to adjust to a new role this season, as midfield partners Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo left the club, but after a rough spell to start the campaign, he again showed why he's so highly regarded.

Per WhoScored.com, he scored eight goals and added 12 assists in Serie A, and he also showed his technical prowess:

The France international is one of the most well-rounded players in the game today. He's technically proficient, strong on the ball and has a good eye for a pass, and he's capable of scoring both outrageous goals from distance and from set pieces.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

It's easy to see why just about every top team in Europe is interested in his services, but every signal coming out of Turin indicates he won't be leaving his current club anytime soon. Juventus have built an impressive team filled with young talent in the last few years, and Pogba seems perfectly happy with the Bianconeri.

The Old Lady has no reason to sell, and when Pogba does leave the club, it will likely be for a record-setting fee. His history with United―he left the club after an ugly falling-out, per De Menezes―makes a return even less likely, even if Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer in charge.
