Carvajal Injury Blow for Spain

Monday, May 30

The right-back hobbled off the field in tears during his team’s UEFA Champions League final win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday. His club confirmed a “[Grade 2] injury to the right iliopsoas” on their official website. Per Goal (h/t Yahoo Sport), it’s a problem that’ll see him miss the summer showpiece.

As noted by Goal, Arsenal man Hector Bellerin is set to fill in for the stricken right-back in Vicente del Bosque’s squad. Also in the party is Atletico’s Juanfran, meaning Spain won’t be short of quality cover for the Real star.

While Carvajal was at least on the pitch to enjoy the celebrations following Los Blancos’ 11th European Cup win, missing the Euros will be a massive disappointment for him.

The Real Madrid man may not be the most glamorous operator in teams full of superstars at both the club level and on the international stage, but he’s so effective in his position. Carvajal is relentless in his forays on the right, able to surge forward to make an impact in the final third and get back to help defensively, too.

As Bleacher Report’s Karl Matchett noted as Carvajal limped off injured, his deputy at club level, Danilo, has not done a particularly good job so far:

Real will be hopeful of seeing their man come back refreshed for next season, but for Spain’s chances of defending their title in France this summer, it's a big blow.

For a team that revolves around tight, intricate passing in the middle of the pitch, the width the 24-year-old provides on the right flank is vital. And while Juanfran and Bellerin are both exceptional talents, there aren’t many full-backs on the planet capable of replicating the multifaceted influence of Carvajal.
