French Open 2016: Monday Roland Garros Schedule and Bracket Predictions

James DudkoMay 29, 2016

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will take to the court on Monday at the 2016 French Open, when he'll meet Roberto Bautista Agut as he bids to reach the quarter-finals. In the women's event, defending champion Serena Williams will be in action against Elina Svitolina.

Things in the women's draw are still a little unclear after two fourth-round matches, Tsvetana Pironkova against Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep against Samantha Stosur, were interrupted by rain on Sunday, per Roland Garros.

Here are the notable singles matches taking place at Roland Garros on Monday, followed by some predictions for the main bracket:

Bracket Predictions

Djokovic's path became a lot easier after Rafael Nadal withdrew thanks to a wrist injury, per BBC Sport. The two were on course to meet in the semi-final, had the bracket followed expected patterns.

Djokovic looks unstoppable in Paris.

Djokovic has so far been typically ruthless and efficient during his progress at Roland Garros. He's a good bet to produce more of the same against Agut.

He's had a rough run in French Open finals, but Djokovic will have learned from losing to Stan Wawrinka last year, according to Peter Bodo of ESPN: "Djokovic is ideally prepared for anything that might come his way. On top of it, he was so gracious in the wake of that astonishing defeat last year that the concept of karma demands that he win."

But Djokovic doesn't need things written in the stars of fate when he's playing this well. He'll perform like a favourite should.

The weather might have inconvenienced Radwanska's tournament, but her progress seems inevitable after she built a one-set and three-game lead. As KleineBiere of WTA Stats noted, the world No. 2 just doesn't lose from this position at this tournament:

Finishing off a comfortable win would put Radwanska on course to still meet Williams in the final. The latter won't have much trouble overcoming Svitolina.

Reigning champion Williams has shown little signs of being unable to successfully defend her crown. In fact, her toughest threat could actually come from closer to home, in the form of sister Venus.

Bodo believes 36-year-old Venus "is playing some great tennis." The sisters can meet in the semi-final, provided Venus first makes it past Timea Bacsinszky. That's a tall order for a player who hasn't made it to a quarter-final at Roland Garros "in a decade," according to SportingLife.

Venus will again miss out on the quarter-finals.

Bacsinszky can upset the anticipated drama of a Final Four meeting between the Williams' sisters.

If that would only be considered a mild upset, it's nothing compared to a pair of unseeded players making it through after Monday. This year's tournament has already seen Milos Raonic "stunned by unseeded" Albert Ramos-Vinolas, per Sarah Edworthy of Roland Garros' official website.

Looking at Monday's matches, if a similar surprise is likely, Madison Keys looks vulnerable against Kiki Bertens. The Dutch player has been impressive in Paris.

Keys is working hard to adapt her game to clay, according to Tom Perrotta of the Wall Street Journal. Yet her power style just doesn't work as well on the Paris red, something a lively Bertens can exploit.

The favourites in both brackets will do what's expected of them on Monday, but the schedule will provide a surprise or two from the unseeded ranks.
