San Diego State's Nahum Mendoza III, the 27th-ranked golfer in the nation, is tied with South Carolina's Will Starke and Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey for the early lead.
After three birdies on his start at the back nine were canceled out by three bogeys, Mendoza made a strong turn onto the front nine with three more birdies.
Starke recorded a pair of birdies on both the front and back nine, while Humphrey saw two of his five birdies canceled out by bogeys.
San Diego State and Vanderbilt, which both posted scores of three over par Friday, are tied for third behind Arkansas and TCU, which are tied for first with an overall score of two over.
Friday wasn't kind to some of the top seeds, both in the individual and team competitions. The nation's No. 1 team, Stanford, recorded a combined score of 12 over, which has it in a tie for 24th.
Stanford's team features the nation's No. 1 golfer, Maverick McNealy, who shot a six-over 76 on Friday and is in a tie for 126th.
No. 2-ranked Texas didn't fare much better with a nine-over on the day. In fact, only two of the top five teams in the the nation are in the top 10 on the leaderboard. Individually, five of the top six golfers on the leaderboard aren't even ranked, which should create some drama if the trend continues throughout the weekend.
