Did Spelling Bee Co-Champion Nihar Janga Troll His Opponent?

Thomas DuffyMay 26, 2016

The spelling game is not meant for the faint of heart.

Nihar "The Machine" Janga, though, has a heart made of pure ice.

During Thursday night’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, the fifth-grader immediately knew when another competitor, Jairam Hathwar, botched the word "drahthaar"—definitely an easy one.

Then he clapped in Hathwar's face, which resembled the spelling bee equivalent of posterizing a defender. However, the Washington Post's Ian Shapira noted the two had "been applauding and encouraging one another all evening," so it seems possible that Janga was just trying to comfort his foe.

Despite the slip-up, Hathwar became a co-champ along with Janga, who celebrated by throwing up the "X,” just like Dez Bryant:

The Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver loved it:

Hathwar tried to high-five Janga after things became official, but "The Machine" didn't appear to notice.
