2016 French Open: Best and Worst Dressed in Paris

Merlisa Lawrence CorbettMay 29, 2016

Although rain and thunderstorms dampened the first week of the 2016 French Open, sky blue shown brightly over the red clay at Roland Garros.

Worn by Nike sponsored stars Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Eugenie Bouchard, bright blue seemed to be the primary color of choice.

Adidas went for a turn on the wild side with its Y-3 zebra-looking collection. Promising young players Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev both wore the dizzying designs. Their post-match handshake probably produced worldwide eye strain.

Who wore what best? Some players stood above others in terms of style, design and fit. These well put together players got it right from headband to foot gear.

Those who landed on the worst dressed list misfired on one, two or three of those essential fashion elements.

The following are the best and worst dressed at the 2016 French Open.

Honorable Mention Worst: Fernando Verdasco and Yulia Putintseva

Color combos and patterns gone wrong earned Fernando Verdasco and Yulia Putintseva honorable mentions for worst dressed.

Retro rocks. However, 1980s-styled geometric patterns are unworthy of revival.

Honorable Mention Best: Gilles Simon and Dominika Cibulkova

Whether going the sporty look worn by Dominika Cibulkova or Gilles Simon's classic style, keeping it simple rarely fails.

Simon and Cibulkova wore dark outfits with a hint of color. Also worn by Alize Cornet, Cibulkova's Lacoste dress combines traditional tennis styling with a modern body-hugging fit.

Simon's black kit with red trim came from a tamer Adidas' Y-3 collection.

Worst: Monica Puig

Monica Puig wore a classic, figure-flattering A-line dress. The dress took a turn for the worst with white stripes. The neon green shoes destroy what's left of this look. The AT&T logo doesn't help either.

Best: Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens wore a dress with a similar style to Puig's. However, the solid light blue hue and intricate cutout in the back makes this a fashion hit. Unlike with Puig's shoes, the neon green accent on the wristbands complements instead of competes with the outfit.

Worst: Jan-Lennard Struff

Hydrogen calls this design worn by Jan-Lennard Struff "Tennis Tattoo." Good thing this tattoo is easy to remove. Yuck.

Best: Polona Hercog

Polona Hercog wears real tattoos. She looked splendid in this elegant teal outfit by Asics. Also worn by Timea Bacsinszky, the dress features a flouncy skirt and racer back.

Worst: Steve Darcis

Contrasting colors with bold stripes can be a winning combination. Unfortunately, this kit worn by Steve Darcis is a loss. A wide line down the front looks off-kilter. The hints of yellow near the neckline negate the bold contrast between red and black.

Best: Novak Djokovic

At first glance, Darcis' outfit looks much like Novak Djokovic's Uniqlo kit. The difference? The fit and tailoring. Djokovic's outfit is so well designed that the trim on his shirt and shorts line up even when he's in motion.

Worst: Feliciano Lopez

The big bold yellow color block on the front of Feliciano Lopez's top looks very classic Chanel. If this design were on a tweed suit, it would be a winner. As a tennis outfit...no.

Best: Serena Williams

Serena Williams' French Open dress is reminiscent of the two-piece design she wore at the Australian Open. This sporty number epitomizes Williams' playing style: bold and daring.

Worst: The Zebra Herd

No designer received more attention at this year's French Open than Yohji Yamamoto, the man behind the Adidas Y-3 zebra look.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Simona Halep, Tomas Berdych, Ana Ivanovic, Angelique Kerber, Zverev and Thiem are among the players who wore this hot mess. Nearly everyone in the Zebra herd deserved to make the worst dressed list.

Best: Kristina Mladenovic

As stated in the previous slide, almost all of the Zebra designs looked horrible. Somehow, Kristina Mladenovic pulls this look off. She wore the same dress as Ivanovic, yet, the dress looked better on Mladenovic. She stands out from the herd.
